On May 11, 1997, Garry Kasparov - perhaps the best chess player in history, world champion, a man considered a living proof of the limits of human genius - stood up from the table, held his head and surrendered the game. There was no flesh-and-blood rival on the other side of the chessboard. There sat a machine: Deep Blue, a computer built by IBM. For the first time in history, a computer defeated the reigning world champion in a match played under normal tournament rules. The world held its breath because it wasn’t “just” a game. It was a symbol — the moment when many people first felt that machines could surpass us in something we thought was exclusively human.

Two matches and the humiliation that fueled revenge

The story of Deep Blue is a tale of two clashes. In 1996, Kasparov faced an earlier version of the computer and won - although, to everyone’s surprise, he lost one game to the machine, which was a sensation in itself. IBM took this as a challenge. Not genius, but brute strength

Crucial to understanding Deep Blue — and how it differed from later AI breakthroughs — is how it played. Deep Blue did not “understand” chess in the human sense. He had no intuition, no sense of positioning, no creativity. But he had something that humans will never achieve: the ability to calculate approximately two hundred million positions per second. It analyzed the tree of possible moves for many moves forward, evaluated each position according to built-in rules and chose the best continuation.

It was brutal computing power, supported by specialized hardware built exclusively for one task. Deep Blue won not because he was smarter, but because he was unimaginably fast and tireless. This is an important distinction because it shows the first of two ways in which AI catches up with humans: through pure computational power. The second way - something closer to intuition - came only two decades later, when AlphaGo played its famous move 37 in a game too complex for brute force.

The move that broke the champion

There is a detail in this story that is still fascinating to this day. During one game, Deep Blue made a move so unusual, so devoid of obvious purpose, that Kasparov was convinced there was a deep, terrifying intelligence behind it - a plan that he, the world champion, could not see through. The move undermined his confidence. The master began to play more cautiously, nervously, losing his natural aggressive style. He was convinced that he was facing a mind bigger than his own.

The irony is that, as it was later revealed, this disturbing move may have simply been an error: when the machine couldn’t choose a move in the allotted time, it resorted to an emergency, effectively random, option. Kasparov saw genius where there was flaw.
